Elevating Campus Care: Scaling Well-Being Programs Where Students Live
Our Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) team launched the Therapist in Residence (TIR) program to bring mental health support directly into the residence halls. These licensed therapists both live and work within the residential community, making care more visible, accessible, and timely for students.
TIRs offer same-day, next-day, and same-week check-in appointments, allowing students to receive immediate support and, when appropriate, ongoing therapy. Over the past year, the TIR team has provided:
- 302 check-in appointments
- 710 counseling sessions
- More than 250 outreach hours
The team has introduced impactful initiatives such as Grief Café, a welcoming space where students can talk about life, loss, and coping over coffee and tea. Recently, they launched a Holistic Wellness and Mindfulness therapy group that continues to see steady participation each week. Additional programs have included lobby outreach activities and stress-relief events like Paint Night.
Beyond direct counseling and student-centered programming, two TIRs have led campus-wide Mental Health First Aid and QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) trainings for students, staff, and faculty. Currently, approximately 400 individuals have been trained in Mental Health First Aid, including Residence Life and Campus Safety Services staff, and more than 200 individuals have completed QPR training, including Residence Life student staff.
The TIR program has strengthened CAPS services and expanded the university’s overall ability to respond to student needs. With your gift, we can continue offering in-residence programs and experiences that support student well-being. Increased programming creates spaces for connection, reflection, and personal growth within the residential community
